This corresponds to a year-on-year decrease of 5.7 percent on a comparable basis of reported companies.
Messaging apps still on the rise
The latest wave of the AIM (Austrian Internet Monitor) survey of 1,000 Austrian Internet users aged 14 and older shows that messaging apps continue to be among the most popular applications on smartphones. Female users outnumber male users: 83% of female app users use messaging apps, compared to 78% of male users. Weather apps are the second most popular app category, followed by calendar and alarm clock services.
On average, app users in Austria regularly use nine applications, but usually have significantly more apps installed on their smartphone. It is also still relevant that apps can be used free of charge. More than 50% of app users have not spent any money on apps in the last year.
Social networks keep in touch with friends and family
For the current "A1 Social Impact Study," 1,000 cell phone users aged 12 and older were asked how critically they view the topic of self-promotion on the Internet. The result is surprising: While 64% of the under-24s post selfies or food photos online at least once a month, it is precisely these actions that are perceived as annoying by other users and sometimes even lead to the deletion of individual contacts (for around 24%).
In general, social networks are increasingly used, especially by young people up to the age of 24, to share their lives with friends and family. The most popular motifs that are posted are photos with friends or family or selfies, followed by vacation photos and landscape photos in general, followed by animal photos.
In general, the trend is towards deliberate inaccessibility: 57% of respondents sometimes deliberately do not take their smartphone with them in order to be undisturbed.
Data consumption doubles every 18 months in Austria
The study commissioned by Drei on the Internet behavior of Austrians between the ages of 16 and 60 (a total of 1,014 people were surveyed) came to the conclusion that social networks, e-mail and streaming services are used very heavily. Around 50% of respondents use social networks on a daily basis, and more than 81% use the TV media libraries of Austria's largest TV broadcasters. Video streaming services are also very popular, with around 26% of respondents using them several times a week. There is room for improvement in the quality of access technologies. Internet users in rural areas in particular are regularly confronted with outages and disruptions, and the available services are often perceived as being too expensive or of inferior quality.
The Internet of Things changes access to consumer electronics
By 2020, there will be around 100 million networked devices in Germany - this is the conclusion reached by the digital association Bitkom in its current study "Consumer Electronics 2015," which was conducted in cooperation with the consulting firm Deloitte. Two out of three Germans already use a smartphone and four out of ten a tablet, although these devices are not even included in the estimated 100 million.
The networking of individual devices turns conventional consumer electronics into an intelligent system that enables new and creative uses. According to the study, conventional, non-networked devices are already finding it difficult to continue to be accepted by consumers. The study takes a similarly positive view of the development of wearables: sales of 645,000 smartwatches are expected in Germany in 2015, and around 1.07 million fitness trackers are expected to be sold.
First rule edition of Digital Facts published
The "Digital Facts" study by AGOF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Online Forschung - Online Research Group), which first appeared at Dmexco 2014, will be published monthly from August 2015. AGOF thus enables stationary and mobile Internet offerings to be considered together. The Digital Facts replace the previously separate Internet Facts and Mobile Facts studies. The study is based on the latest figures from the official population statistics (microcensus). According to the survey, around 76% of the German population aged 14 and over were on the Internet in the last 3 months. Around 71% of these people have used mobile offers, while nearly 70% have visited both stationary and mobile sites.
Video usage will continue to grow in the coming years
According to the forecast published by the ZenithOptimedia agency, the use of video content on the Internet will continue to increase in 2015, globally by around 23%. The main reason for this trend is the steadily growing prevalence of mobile devices. The agency estimates that video usage via smartphones and tablets will increase by up to 44% in 2015, and by another 35% in 2016. By contrast, usage on stationary devices will grow somewhat more slowly, at around 10% in 2015 and around 7% in 2016.
As a result, the agency expects linear TV usage to peak in 2015 and to grow again by around 3%. Accordingly, ZenithOptimedia anticipates a decline in linear consumption - up to 2% in 2016 and around 1% in 2017. This forecast decline is also related to the growing range of TV content available online.
