Youth Internet Monitor 2024
The new Youth Internet Monitor is here and it shows: WhatsAps and YouTube are the big social network losers. On the other hand, BeReal is on the rise.
Kids today spend a lot of time on and with their smartphones. Communicating with each other, sending pictures and videos or simply showing what someone is doing and where someone is at the moment – this is how communication is organized in young society. However, the new Youth Internet Monitor from saferinternet.at shows clear changes in usage behavior. This cannot be denied for the PR industry either, as different target groups are addressed depending on the company, topic and message. And it is important to “catch” them on the right channels.
The young people surveyed here are aged between 11 and 17. WhatsApp is still the most used platform among kids with 76%. However, the messaging service has lost 20% of its usage within a year. The picture is the same for YouTube: 70% of young people use the platform, but this is 24% less than in the previous year. Instagram is equally high in the ranking of the most used social media platforms with 71% and “only” a loss of 4%.
There are many reasons for loss of use. For example, new apps and social networks are constantly copying the concept of YouTube or WhatsApp.
Another reason, according to the study, is that kids are increasingly leaving the channels on which their parents or grandparents are also active. They are switching to innovations such as Snapchat, Discord or BeReal. The latter platform is also the winner among social networks, with an increase of 13% compared to the previous year.
