25th Congress of Women Journalists: We were there!

Inspiring – instructive – personal: this was the 25th Women Journalists’ Congress

One question right at the outset: what needs must media fulfill for recipients today? Do we read, watch or listen to them in order to be informed, to keep up to date, to be entertained or to be shown perspectives? These defined user needs must be taken into account in print, online and digital reporting so that media consumption does not continue to fall. Alexandra Borchardt also highlighted this in her keynote speech “Dare to tell more truth!”. The professor in Munich and former editor at the German Press Agency, the Financial Times and the Süddeutsche Zeitung is convinced that Tik-Tok or podcasts can also provide information and do so in a low-threshold way and for new target groups, but that trust in the media generally needs to be rebuilt.

“Journalism is the basis for the free formation of opinion!”

Organizer Maria Rauch-Kallat and host and President of the Federation of Austrian Industries Georg Knill emphasized how important journalism is, remains and will be in today’s world in their opening remarks at the 25th Women Journalists’ Congress at the House of Industry in Vienna. Women’s Minister Susanne Raab also supports this and once again congratulates the winner of the Golden Media Lioness 2023 – Alexandra Föderl-Schmid.

Inspiring presentations, informative break-outs and personal discussions

More than 200 journalists, PR and media women met this year at JOKO23, where topics discussed included:

  • Print and/or digital: crises, opportunities and developments over the last quarter of a century
  • Why nobody clicks on Good News: Disasters generate attention and circulation
  • “DigiHate”
  • “Burning media women at the digital stake”

In this keynote speech, Claudia Reiterer (ORF) reported on hate postings and personal attacks on her as a woman, as a media maker and as a journalist. But all women are advised: Be like Pippi!

Workshops on artificial intelligence, quality journalism, the MeToo debate and much more rounded off the information round-up.
