In contrast, pre-IMPLANTATION diagnostics are prohibited to an almost complete extent. The embryo must not be examined for the presence of the disease in families already affected by severe hereditary disorders, nor must the chromosome set in the IVF dish be checked for completeness. Couples affected by monogenic hereditary diseases such as hereditary muscular atrophy, etc, who wish to have a healthy child, have to go to neighboring countries to have preimplantation genetic diagnosis performed.

The Kinderwunschklinik Wels under the direction of Dr Leonhard Loimer has taken up this issue and is calling for a change in the law in this area. The doctors are not interested in filtering out designer babies, but rather in helping desperate parents fulfill their desire to have a healthy child.
