The publication of the third wave in 2016 once again confirms the enormous mobile Internet usage in Austria. According to current figures, this is more than 70 percent, while stationary Internet use without exception only accounts for just under 30 percent. Mobile usage is particularly high among the young target group. 97 percent of 14- to 19-year-olds surf on the move.

Slight gender differences are discernible here.

73.1 percent of men use the Internet on the move. Among women, 67.3 percent access the Internet using mobile devices.

The Internet is most commonly used for using search engines, but it is also frequently used for sending and receiving private e-mails, querying weather services, news and politics, as well as targeted searches for offers and route planning.

The ÖWA (Austrian Web Analysis) has been collecting objective personal reach and structural data for the Internet since the fourth quarter of 2006, based on a multi-method study to obtain information about users (unique users). Since June 2010, mobile usage has also been surveyed, and with the 2016-I results, data on app usage could also be presented for the first time.

In order to ensure the complete collection of data on measured Internet offerings in the Austrian online market, this year saw a switch from two to four survey waves per year.

The current ÖWA Plus survey (3rd quarter 2016) represents 92.4 percent of all Internet users (5.7 million Austrians).

The ÖWA Plus manual on the current survey will be published at the end of January 2017.
