Honda has set a new world record for fuel efficiency in the Guinness Book of World Records. During its 25-day journey through 24 EU countries, the Honda Civic Tourer covered 13,498 kilometers and achieved an average consumption of 2.82 liters per 100 kilometers. Behind the wheel were two members of Honda's European research and development team, Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren. The challenge was to demonstrate the impressive fuel efficiency of the 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine under real driving conditions.

The team covered an impressive distance - comparable to a drive from the UK to Australia - and needed only nine refueling stops to do so. On average, the Civic Tourer managed 1,500 kilometers per tank of fuel. For the entire trip, the fuel costs were thus only 645 euros*.

The team set off on this very special journey on June 1 in Aalst, Belgium, to travel clockwise through all the countries of mainland Europe. When they returned on June 25, the drivers were able to show impressive fuel economy, more than 25 percent below the Civic Tourer's stated fuel consumption figures of 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers.

The official title of GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ is "Lowest fuel consumption - all 24 contiguous EU countries". Fuel consumption is measured in liters per 100 km (or miles per gallon) and calculated for the entire distance.

According to the rules, the vehicle that completed the record attempt had to be a standard model. No adjustments or modifications were allowed to be made in order to recreate real driving conditions. This was assessed by an independent witness who inspected the vehicle at the beginning and end of each trip. Refueling was done at regular gas stations and the vehicle was filled up at each fuel stop to avoid any weight advantage to

achieve. In addition, the tires were inflated to the recommended pressures and the track setting was changed to the factory setting to mimic the experience of a regular rider.
