Those are "promising areas to make a big impact," Gates wrote on the short messaging service Twitter. "That's what I would do if I started today." In addition, he advises young people to surround themselves with other people who drive them. For him, he said, it was his wife Melinda.

Looking back on his career, there are some things he didn't know but would have liked to have known, Gates wrote further. For example, that intelligence can take many different forms. "It is not one-dimensional. And not as important as I thought."

He regrets that he did not know enough about the injustices of the world after leaving school. Still, he said, he is optimistic today and believes the world's problems can be solved. "This is a great time to be alive. Make the most of it."

Bill Gates begins his advice with a wink and a famous movie scene, but stresses that he doesn't mean to sound like that.
